Short hair is undoubtedly a bold statement reflecting confidence and style. But it might not be that way from the start. The first time I cut my hair short, I was 22 years old and it took me years to get used to it and gain the confidence that I have now. However, at 46, I don't know if I could truly embrace long hair again and have learned a lot about short hair along the way. If you're seeking insights on short hairstyles, products, and styling tools, I invite you to dive into my world of managing short hair. Plus, click the video at the end to see the interview I did with a stylist that specializes in short hair.

A Peek Into My Short Hair Journey

Give yourself time to get used to having short hair. From the time we are children, a long hair standard of beauty has been paraded before us. Fairy tales like Rapunzel reward women with flowing tresses. Celebrities that sport short hair are in the minority and, when they do cut their hair, it's often headlining news.

Having embraced the short hair lifestyle, I feel it's only fair to dispel some myths. Short hairstyles are not maintenance free. They require the right products and tools. And, you will get to know your stylist well because you'll be in their chair every four to six weeks. But, from chic pixie cuts to trendy bobs, short hair opens up a world of possibilities and it's worth it.

How I Manage My Short Hair

Maintaining short hair is a breeze with the right routine. I've found that using high-quality products tailored for short hair is essential. Whether it's a volumizing mousse for added texture or a nourishing hair oil for a sleek finish, investing in the right products can elevate your short hair game.

My hair is very thick, full, and wild, so I start with a root pump mousse that helps it to stay in whatever direction I brush it as I'm drying it. Then I use a texturizing taffy to stand it up or smooth it down, depending on what style I'm in at the time. Finally, I'll top it off with a moveable hairspray if I'm in a bob phase, or a hold-tight hairspray if I'm sporting something wild or spiky.

When it comes to styling, the right tools make all the difference. Another short hair myth is that people often believe they don't need to blow it dry. This is definitely not the case. In fact, you'll want a blow dryer like this one. A good quality flat iron or a versatile hair straightener can help achieve various looks with ease. If you have a very short style, you'll want a flat iron like this. But, if you have a little length, you would be better off with this flat iron. Embracing short hair is not only about the cut but also the styling, so having the right tools in your arsenal is a game-changer.

Communication is Key

No matter what style you decide on, make sure you take a picture of it to your stylist. Your definition of short may be different than theirs. Having a visual can truly make the difference between loving and hating the final style.

Likewise, make sure you talk to them about problem areas at your next appointment. If your hair isn't behaving, they can trim it differently or suggest a styling product that can help.

Short hair, big impact!
