Your Essential Packing List: Beach Vacation Outfits

As a Floridian, packing for a beach vacation is a breeze because I already have so many of the items in my closet. But, if you don't live near the beach or this is your first time visiting a sandy paradise, you may not know which items you'll need, which can result in overpacking. I put together this handy list so you can easily pull together the essential items you'll need for your trip from the moment you settle into your lounge chair until it's time to head home. Beach Vacation Essentials: Sun Hat
The key to a great sun hat is to make sure that it's packable. I love a Panama hat, but it will definitely get crushed in your luggage. Visors are a good option because you only need to worry about the brim and that can be shaped around some rolled up clothing. Just click on the picture to order.
Beach Vacation Essentials: Sunglasses
Even if you're under an umbrella, the sun's rays can be reflected off the water and do serious damage to your eyes. Protect yourself with the right sunglasses and keep them safe by making sure they come in a traveling case that allows you to easily slip them into your carry on or checked bag. Sunglasses are one of the areas where I would rather buy from a known brand, so I've included both budget and luxury versions.
Beach Vacation Essentials: Button-Down Shirt
A button-down shirt is the most versatile piece of clothing you'll pack for your beach vacation. You can use it as a beach cover up, throw it on in the morning when you want to go down to breakfast, or pair it with shorts or a skirt for an evening out. It's the must-have item you want to pack, even if nothing else from this essential packing list makes it into your suitcase.
Beach Vacation Essentials: Ball Cap
You may be wondering why I included a ball cap when I already had a sun hat. Because they have very different jobs! The sun hat is great for shading your face, but the ball cap has many other functions. When you want to head down to breakfast but don't want to shower until you get back, the ball cap is the perfect bedhead cover up. If you are heading out on a water expedition, the ball cap is going to do a much better job at keeping your hair out of your face and staying on your head in strong winds. Plus, you can wear it in the airport so you don't have to pack it, or it's easy to curl around some clothing, which means it doesn't take up any space in your luggage.
Beach Vacation Essentials: Blouse
Having a blouse in your suitcase offers a lot of versatility to your outfits. You can dress it up for an evening out, or pair it with a pair of distressed shorts for a BoHo effect. Plus, most blouses are thin which makes them perfect for beach weather.
Beach Vacation Essentials: Swimsuit
Does this item need any introduction? Wearing this is the whole reason for the beach vacation! I always take at least two swimsuits because you don't want to put on a suit that is still damp from the day before. Plus, a great one piece can also double as a swimsuit and a cute top.
Beach Vacation Essentials: Cover Up
A great cover up is so much more than an item of modesty designed to cover your swimsuit as you make your way through your hotel or resort. It should be a part of the outfit, giving you an air of glam! The right cover up can even be worn on sightseeing expeditions and most are so lightweight that they don't take up any room in your suitcase.
Beach Vacation Essentials: Long Pants
I have been on so many beach vacations where the weather suddenly turns. Rather than spend your precious vacation time trying to find a pair of long pants to keep you warm, just pack a just-in-case pair in your suitcase. Denim is my go-to when it comes to long pants, but trousers or cargo pants will also fit perfectly into your beach themed wardrobe. No matter what material you decide on, make sure they're a loose fit. The last thing you want is a pair of clingy pants in a climate of high humidity.

Perfect for layering or wearing alone, t-shirts are a must-have when packing for your beach vacation. I like to pack a few in basic black and white, then add in a few with fun quotes or pics.
Beach Vacation Essentials: Dress
Dresses are the icon of beach vacations. They're so versatile! You can wear it as a swimsuit cover up, while you're sightseeing, or it's perfect for an upscale restaurant. As a Floridian, I will warn you to be aware of the winds coming off the ocean. They can easily pick up a dress and give a whole new meaning to the word "sightseeing."

This is something I always forget to pack and when I arrive at my tropical destination, I have no way to lug all my gear down to the pool or beach. Most beach bags can fold up to a fraction of their size so you can slip it in your luggage, or make it do double duty and use it as your personal item on the flight.
